PLAYING WITH DYNAMO PLAYER

Dynamo Player has recently (As of Revit 2018.1 Release) received some rather funky additions, namely the ability to have Inputs and Outputs.

While still, content wise, a little behind the seriously awesome Data-Shapes package (Shoutout Mostafa El Ayoubi), it gives beginners and those not particularly keen to delve into Visual Programming the ability to use tools generated by others which is a big win.

DESIGNTECH INFOGRAPHIC

Ever wondered what we do at designtech – the type of work, our current clients and our projects? This info-graphic will hopefully explain all of this. For more information or to find out how we can work together please email at info@designtech.io

DYNAMO PROGRESS BAR

This is a short post about a Progress Bar Form that you can implement in Dynamo. It only works with a Python Script Node, as you need to embed it within the process you are tracking. Normally you would use it when you want to visualise the progress of a lengthy process. This is also my first post after joining designtech, which is quite exciting!

CREATE AND MANAGE FILTERS IN REVIT

Please find a link below to download the ‘Create and Manage Filters’ tool as demonstrated at AU2017. A detailed overview of the tool, how to use and future use cases will follow shortly in a more detailed blog piece.

SLATTED FACADE: EXPLORING GENERATIVE DESIGN AND AUTO-DOCUMENTATION IN DYNAMO

This post explores Generative Design in Dynamo using a Slatted Facade as geometrical test-case, and then examines some options for the automatic generation of documentation back in Revit.

DESIGNTECH DYNAWARDS – THE RESULTS

Over the past four weeks or so we have been requesting the Dynamo Community to vote on their favourite and most used packages, created by other members of the community. We had a great response with a total of 210 people voting for 41 nominees across the 8 different awards up for grabs.

COLLABORATION FOR REVIT (C4R)

I recently presented at the Autodesk Design and Collaboration Event, which was held at Cundall’s office here in London. There were many different talks over the course of the evening exploring the end-to-end design workflow, and how you can use the latest technology and approaches to optimise project delivery. The evening featured insights from across the Design process, with contributions from Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Cundall, Grimshaw Architects, Purcell, RPS Group, SLR Consulting, and more.

INTRODUCING THE DESIGNTECH DYNAWARDS

I am pleased to announce designtech.io became a year old this week! To say it has been an exciting journey over the past year would be an understatement. At designtech we understand the importance of continued learning and knowledge sharing being a fundamental part of progressing as a collective industry.

As we all know, the Dynamo Community is great and there are many people that have contributed to help develop this tool to what it is now. The speed at which Dynamo has developed can be attributed greatly to the introduction of the package manager, which allows users to create custom nodes and libraries and then upload them for the community to download and use.

WRANGLE THAT DATA: DYNAMO FILTRATION AND SORTING

List Management is key to leveraging power in Dynamo. This blog post will explore a series of options to Filter and Sort using out-of-the-box nodes, designscript and python workflows.

This list is not exhaustive, nor does it cover the myriad of different Collectors and Custom Filtration Nodes present within other packages, but it does provide some insight into how filtration and sorting can be approached.

DIGITAL OFFICE

We shifted offices just before Christmas from London Moorgate to London Kings Cross: Demobilisation took 15 minutes, we hailed an uber on the company account for a short ride and had remobilised within 15 minutes – computers on, fingers thumping the keyboard. We managed to be up and running in another location over the course of our lunch break. One desktop, a couple of laptops, additional screens, cables and our personal gear. That’s it. No paper, no junk, no mess.

GENERATIVE DESIGN

In architecture and design we can use Generative Design to leverage the power of computing in order to find a desirable outcome. Opposed to iterative design which generates further solutions based on data acquired in the previous, generative design explores numerous solutions that have been defined within a set of constraints simultaneously. These constraints demarcate both the minimum and maximums of each input variable we have chosen.

SPOT COORDINATES WORKFLOW

Before I go on I just want to give a shout out to Mostafa El Ayoubi and his fantastic Dynamo Package ‘Data-Shapes’. We will come back to this a little later on.
A client of ours recently wanted the ability to schedule all the Spot Coordinates in Revit for purposes of setting out. As it stands in Revit there is no way to schedule Dimensions, and Spot Coordinates fall into this category. However, we can use a mixture of both Dynamo and Revit family creation in order to facilitate this requirement.

CREATE INTERIOR ELEVATIONS

During the latter stages of a project, architects may be required to produce interior elevations of particular spaces/rooms in a building. These can be key to show furniture layouts or in some instances small power and data positions.

Revit allows the user to create interior elevations by placing the elevation marker within the internal space of rooms. By doing so, it automatically constrains the view to the begin at the finished floor elevation and stop at the ceiling. […]

DOOR RENUMBERING

designtech are always looking to develop new tools or enhance software currently out there. When I first started developing Dynamo definitions over three years ago, the tool wasn’t particularly stable but it has since come on a long way and much of this is down to the development team and community helping to build and improve Dynamo on a daily basis. Dynamo offers functionality to Revit, that would have been previously difficult to comprehend.
